Ok, where were we? yeah, binding right?!

the first attempt at bending the binding and purfling was a total mess, Thanks Alain for giving me more purple heart than just enough, i scrapped the first batch totally, not enough water and too much heat and going too quick was the recipe for disaster! The second batch turned out ok tho!

installation of the purfling after bending the second batch on the hot pipe

purf installed

While scraping the purf, i scrape a bit too hard at that spot and it removed the inside of it, i reglued some in there and will see how it looks tomorrow.

the guilty guy!

Now, the bending of the purple heart binding , this is the the highest temp i've reached! PH is brittle and is a PITA to work with but i managed to win over it this time!

This is how it came out of the bender and was wondering if i should add a very thin line of light colored wood between the PH binding and the sides , maple or red cedar or just leave it like this? would appreciate your thoughts on this!

Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks for looking!

Serge

457 degrees! Wow, I'm glad you didn't go up in smoke, Serge. I'd bend if you heated me that hot. I'm happy you got it to bend, I think it will look really great.

Thanks Ron, i wasn't sure at first but it turned out quite well, i was afraid because the first batch had broken in two while trying to bend the upper bout section! This time i wasn't gonna let that happen!

All right! That looks fantastic! I see you've been busy all right!

I think there's enough contrast between the binding and purfling as it is. I'd go with just the PH as it is...

So, string her up already!

Very sweet Serge! That purple heart is going to look great against the purfling. Keep it up!

Not to ask a silly question Serge, but why did you not install the binding and purfling together as most if not all of us do ??? You should try the fiber tape, you will need way less than you are using, and you can see thru it as well, plus it doesnt break like masking will as you really wrench on it to get things tight, like at the waist !!!! A couple tricks to keep in mind as you do this are - lighlty sand off the inside corner of the binding, it will seat into the ledge easier, and there is room there for a little glue squeeze as you glue and pull around, 2 - break teh edge on teh top of the binding so its not sharp and wont break the tape as you pull hard.

Check this one out - binding and purf together, fiber tape, you can see thru it, and its all put in dry, then dabbed with CA to hold it. Heat gun to take off the tape, CA the whole binding top and sides, then scrape everything flush. I use a random orbit sander to get the glue residue off the top and back as I am prepping it for finish. When doing mitred purf, this is the only way I dot them - dry fit and tape so you can see how well the fit is, then glue.

Nice job Tony.

The only thing I'd add is on the butt joint of the purfling and binding -- use Titebond -- it makes for a less visible joint (unless of course you can CA'em as Tony shows here).

Yeah titebond would likely be better, especially if you have maple, but its a pain if you are doing mitres, you get the glue in and with some squeeze out you cant see if its tight - if the wood and purf is dark, it wont show at all. That said, even here with something thats pretty tight, it might look about the same.

WOW, THANKS EVERYONE! I don't know if it's just me thinkin' that but i got a feelin' that Purple heart sales are gonna go through the roof!

Mike T, i hear ya buddy, i owe you a big one like i owe myself ! I'll do the next phone call pal!

Thanks Anthony, 457 at the peak but not for very long, i brought the temp down as fast as i could, the PH is a tough cookie to cook!

Thanks Tony, using that fiber tape makes more sense than mine and i'll give it a try next time. I know there are people who are glueing the binding and purftogether prior to the installation in the channel but my small paws have a hard time manoeuvering with both at the same time but with what i just read fromyour post, i should be able to do it your way next time 'round! Thanks again my friend and coach!

Thanks Paul, the Farenheit thermometer was given to me by John Hall, makes more sense huh? I know Anthony is jealous of mine tho!

Thanks Bob, hopefully, it will be ready for our awaited week end, if not, i'll play Anthony's gitter and Alain's!

Thanks Russ! I wish i knew how to make beautiful joints like you tho but i know my time will come too, gotta be patient huh?

Thank you Hesh, i hear you too on the tape stuff bro and it will be on the next buying list if i could just decide to sell them empties! never been so broke in my entire life! but never had that much fun though! Hey bud, you have to make it with Lacey at Bob's, i want to play your gitters too and sing with you some smokin' songs all right?

Anthony and Tony, Titebond is what i used( ok, carpenter's glue) and i feel very comfortable with it, more than CA but with time and practice, i should come up with some tricks!

Thanks Dave for the inspiration from great bands and Rock Songs, gotta keep a good pace if i want to string it up soon!

Serge, while I'm impressed with the manly temperatures you used, I must add the caveat to not get any paper near your heat source--it burns at F.451.
